The Town of Duck is pleased to announce the appointment of Matt Dudek as Fire Chief, effective March 24, 2025. Chief Dudek has served as Acting Fire Chief since December 2024 and brings more than 25 years of experience in the fire service to this leadership role.
Chief Dudek began his career as a volunteer firefighter with the Virginia Beach Fire Department while serving in the United States Navy. Following his military service, he spent over two decades with the Troy Fire Department in New York, where he rose to the rank of Captain before retiring. He and his family later relocated to Southern Shores, fulfilling a long-time dream of returning to the coastal region. He then joined the Southern Shores Fire Department as Deputy Fire Chief, where he continued his commitment to fire service and public safety.
In addition to his extensive firefighting experience, Chief Dudek has contributed to fire training and certification programs across the region. As the Dare County liaison for the College of the Albemarle (COA), he played a key role in developing and delivering fire training programs. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fire and Emergency Management from the State University of New York and a master’s degree in Homeland Security from the Naval Postgraduate School.
During his tenure as Acting Fire Chief for the Town of Duck, Chief Dudek successfully prepared the department’s budget and initiated the integration of the operational budget with the Town to enhance efficiency. He also led a review of existing programs to identify opportunities for improvement and cost savings, facilitated the hiring of a new firefighter, and oversaw critical building repairs—all while ensuring uninterrupted service to the community.
