TRAFFIC
- Officers issued 15 traffic enforcement actions during the week.
PROPERTY CHECKS
- 174 business checks were made. No unsecured doors were found.
- 114 seasonal property checks were made. 2 unsecured doors were found.
- 13 extra patrols were requested by out-of-town property owners this week.
INCIDENTS OF INTEREST
- Trespassing (Duck Road)
On February 17, 2025, officers were dispatched to contact a homeowner who saw a young male on his property on a security camera. Officers checked the residence and surrounding properties and found no signs of attempted entry. Officers were unable to locate the male.
- Fraud (Plover Drive)
On February 22, 2025, officers were dispatched to contact a homeowner who received several phone calls during which the caller advised the victim there were warrants for her arrest for missing grand jury. The homeowner was advised that the calls were fraudulent.
- Suspicious Condition (Wood Duck Drive)
On February 22, 2025, officers were dispatched to this location after the caller heard a loud crash and the sound of a motor running. Officers arrived and checked the area, but did not observe anything out of the ordinary. When officers checked this home, they found an unsecured door. The residence was searched and everything appeared okay.
- Domestic Assault (Location withheld to protect the victim.)
On February 23, 2025, officers were dispatched to the Southern Shores Police Department to make contact with a female that was staying in Duck. Officers learned the victim had been assaulted multiple times by her boyfriend over the past few months. Officers obtained a warrant for the arrest of the suspect, Dalton James Barcroft, of Aydlett, NC. Barcroft was charged with domestic assault of a female.
- Suspicious Vehicle (Duck Road)
On February 23, 2025, officers observed a suspicious vehicle parked at the Town’s Public Safety Building. Officers made contact with the vehicle’s occupants and learned they were supporting racers participating in a road race coming through Duck.
- Suspicious Condition (Pelican Way)
On February 23, 2025, officers were dispatched to this location after the caller saw flashlights under a residence and a light turn on inside the residence. Officers checked the exterior of the residence and found it to be secure, but as an added measure they obtained the door code to the residence to search inside. The home was vacant. Officers were unable to locate any suspicious persons in the area.
TRAFFIC CRASHES
- Hit and Run (Duck Road)
On February 17, 2025, officers investigated a traffic crash in which two juveniles riding an electric-assisted bicycle (e-bike) on the multi-use path struck a vehicle exiting a business. The e-bike was being operated on the multi-use path in violation of Town ordinance and the driver of the vehicle failed to stop before turning onto Duck Road. The driver of the vehicle, Arturo Guttierrez of Elizabeth City, NC, fled the scene on foot prior to the officers’ arrival. Officers obtained a warrant for the arrest of Guttierrez, charging him with felony failure to stop at the scene of a crash involving personal injury, driving while license revoked due to a prior DWI, possession of fictitious registration plates, and failure to insure a motor vehicle. Gutierrez was already wanted for two counts of failing to appear for court appearances for previous criminal charges. Guttierrez was taken into custody by the Nags Head Police Department the following day.
