The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City, NC has issued a Winter Storm Watch, Extreme Cold Watch and High Wind Watch for Dare County, effective through 4 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2026.
Dare County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the storm, which is forecasted to bring the most significant impacts from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Residents and visitors are urged to prepare now for dangerous conditions and keep in mind that conditions are expected to linger through at least early next week.
Key impacts include:
- Extremely cold temperatures in the teens and single digits
- 4+ inches of snow countywide, with 6 to 10 inches possible in some areas.
- Wind gusts of 50–65 mph
- Severe coastal flooding from both the ocean and sound, particularly on Hatteras Island
