Winter Storm Watch

The National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City, NC has issued a Winter Storm Watch, Extreme Cold Watch and High Wind Watch for Dare County, effective through 4 p.m. Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Dare County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the storm, which is forecasted to bring the most significant impacts from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. Residents and visitors are urged to prepare now for dangerous conditions and keep in mind that conditions are expected to linger through at least early next week. 

Key impacts include:

  • Extremely cold temperatures in the teens and single digits
  • 4+ inches of snow countywide, with 6 to 10 inches possible in some areas. 
  • Wind gusts of 50–65 mph
  • Severe coastal flooding from both the ocean and sound, particularly on Hatteras Island

A Few Days Out:

If the forecast calls for winter weather, start preparing now. 

  • Have emergency supplies for your home and car.
  • Prevent pipe freezing by allowing faucets to drip, opening cabinet doors around plumbing and insulating any exposed pipes.
  • Check your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Replenish fuel for your car and heating sources.

The Day Before:

Forecast accuracy continues to improve. Keep checking the National Weather Service website for the latest updates. 

  • Adjust plans.

  • Bring pets indoors and ensure they have water.

During & After:

Remain vigilant and stay informed. Drive only if necessary. 

  • Check on neighbors, friends and family members.
  • Properly ventilate emergency heat sources.
  • Keep generators at least 20 feet from your home.
  • Take it easy when shoveling.
