Roots in Duck
March 20 @ 10:00 am
The Town of Duck invites residents and Duck business owners to participate in Roots in Duck, a community program focused on growing native trees that help protect and strengthen the coastal environment. Participants can adopt one of 50 young Bald Cypress trees and foster it in a 3-gallon container for approximately two years.
By caring for a tree, participants help expand Duck’s tree canopy, support wildlife habitat, improve water quality, and contribute to nature-based solutions that protect the shoreline of the Currituck Sound. Bald Cypress trees are especially well suited to coastal conditions and play an important role in stabilizing shorelines and building climate resilience.
Foster parents will receive simple care guidelines and educational materials from Town staff to help their tree thrive. After about two years, participants will be encouraged to plant their tree in a permanent location—either along suitable shoreline areas in Duck or on private property.
Distribution will take place on Friday, March 20 at 10 a.m. in the North Parking Lot of the Duck Town Park. Only 50 saplings are available. Registration is not required but highly encouraged as the saplings are available on a first- come, first- serve basis.
