Healthy Tanks, Happy Banks

Now offering complimentary septic inspections for Duck property owners through a grant-funded pilot program.

A well-maintained septic system protects your health, your wallet, and the environment. When septic systems fail, waste can leak into groundwater and coastal waters—polluting ecosystems, threatening wildlife, and making activities like swimming and fishing unsafe. Regular maintenance prevents costly repairs and keeps our communities and waterways clean for everyone to enjoy.

Why is this important?

We are dedicated to fostering awareness and responsible action among Duck’s residents, property owners, and visitors to protect the Town’s unique coastal environment through proper septic care. In a community shaped by tourism and seasonal rentals, many people remain unaware of how septic systems function, or how their misuse can harm local waterways, wildlife, and the natural beauty that makes Duck so special.

Our mission is to bridge that knowledge gap by connecting everyday septic practices to environmental stewardship. Through education, we aim to empower both homeowners and short-term guests to become “Septic Smart” and take part in preserving the health of our tanks and the vitality of the Outer Banks. By cultivating a shared sense of responsibility, Healthy Tanks, Happy Banks supports Duck’s legacy of environmental respect and sustainability while setting an example for coastal communities nationwide.

Duck’s beauty depends on clean water and a healthy environment. As sea levels rise and development continues, septic systems face increasing pressure.

This initiative takes a proactive approach to:

  • Prevent septic system failures
  • Protect water quality in wetlands and estuaries
  • Reduce risks to homes and public health
  • Strengthen community resilience to climate change

Why Septic Health Matters

Protecting Water Quality

Failing septic systems can release pollutants into:

✔ Protect fragile coastal ecosystems
