A State of Emergency has been issued for Dare County due to impacts from the winter storm.
Administrative Office Closures
The Town of Duck Administrative Offices will be closed on Monday, February 2.
Duck Road Conditions
6:50 p.m. Duck Road Update, Saturday, January 31: Conditions are extremely hazardous. No road markings are visible on Duck Road at this time, and surfaces are incredibly slippery. Ongoing snowfall combined with blowing snow is significantly reducing visibility, and conditions are expected to worsen as evening continues. Stay home and off the roads.
11:20 a.m. Duck Road Update, Sunday, February 1: Road conditions throughout Town continue to be dangerous due to snow and ice, poor visibility, and extreme cold. Although snowfall may have tapered off, overnight refreezing and weather-related limitations on emergency access could make conditions even more dangerous.
9:15 a.m. Duck Road Update, Monday, February 2: While NCDOT has plowed Duck Road, anything ther was left on the road is solid ice following overnight refreezing. Travel conditions are hazardous, especially in shaded areas. Conditions are expected to remain dangerous through the morning hours until temperatures rise and sunlight begins to improve traction. Please avoid all unnecessary travel at this time. If you can delay travel until conditions improve, please do so. The safest choice this morning is to stay off the roads until temperatures rise and the sun has a chance to help.
Sanitation Schedule Changes
The Town of Duck residential curbside recycling collection for Monday, February 2 has been cancelled. TFC will resume collection on Monday, February 9. Please secure your recycling container!
Waste Management plans to collect commercial solid waste dumpsters on Tuesday, February 3, 2026. If snow plowing occurs, please ensure a clear and accessible path in front of dumpsters to allow for safe collection. Trash trucks are approximately 36 feet long and require a wide, unobstructed area and sufficient clearance in front of dumpsters to service them properly.
Residential waste collection that is normally scheduled for today will be delayed until Friday, February 6, 2026.
Commercial businesses that use roll-out carts should also expect collection to occur on Friday, in conjunction with residential service.
Protect Your Home
- Protect pipes by letting faucets drip, opening cabinet doors under sinks, and insulating exposed pipes
- Know how to shut off water to your home in case a pipe bursts
- Never use grills, camp stoves, or generators indoors or in enclosed spaces
Power Outages and Roads
- Any power outages should be reported directly to Dominion Power
- Report an outage on Dominion’s website here.
- Or call 866-366-4357.
- For current road conditions, visit DriveNC.gov or the Duck Road Traffic Cameras.
- Stay indoors, limit all travel, and stay off roadways. Be prepared to stay home through the weekend and possibly into next week, as driving conditions are not expected to improve until temperatures climb above freezing.
- If you lose power during cold weather, prioritizing safety is essential. The tips below can help you stay warm and protected until electricity is restored.
- Use heat sources safely
Fireplaces and wood stoves can provide warmth—follow the manufacturer’s directions and be sure all vents and flues are clear. Never operate grills, camp stoves, or generators inside your home or garage. These can release dangerous carbon monoxide. When using a space heater, place it at least three feet from anything that could catch fire and don’t leave it running unattended. - Hold onto body heat
Dress in multiple layers of warm, loose clothing. Use blankets, coats, or sleeping bags to help retain heat. Have everyone stay in one room and close doors to unused spaces to keep warmth contained. - Limit cold air coming in
Shut curtains and blinds to reduce heat loss through windows. Place towels or extra clothing along door and window gaps to block drafts. - Keep yourself fueled
Eat regular meals and, if possible, sip warm, non-alcoholic drinks. Staying nourished helps your body maintain warmth. - Look out for others
Check on neighbors, particularly older adults, people with disabilities, and households with young children. - Stay up to date
Keep a battery-powered radio or a fully charged phone nearby to receive updates from local authorities.
- Use heat sources safely
Please note:
The Town of Duck does not own a snow plow nor any snow removal resources. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is responsible for plowing public roads only and does not plow private roads. NCDOT resources will be limited, as the storm is expected to impact much of the state.
If you are concerned about being stranded after the storm, please make arrangements now either to shelter in place or relocate before conditions deteriorate.
