Bias Speaker Series: Echoes of 1898

April 16 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

Step into a powerful and often overlooked chapter of North Carolina’s past in this thought-provoking historical presentation.

In November 1898, the city of Wilmington experienced the only successful coup d’état in United States history, an armed insurrection that resulted in the deaths of at least 21 people and the violent overthrow of a duly elected local government. At the time, Wilmington was the largest city in the state, making this event all the more significant in shaping regional and national history.

But could similar events have unfolded elsewhere?

This program explores the question of whether a comparable, though perhaps smaller-scale, incident occurred in Elizabeth City, which was among the ten largest towns in North Carolina during that same period. Through a careful examination of historical records, accounts, and emerging scholarship, this presentation invites participants to consider the evidence and engage in a deeper conversation about the complexities of this era.

Join us on Thursday, April 16 in the Paul F. Keller Meeting Hall (1200 Duck Road) as Dr. Glen Bowman explores the past, tackles challenging questions, and reflects on how history continues to shape our communities today. This event is in collaboration with The Bias Foundation. A light reception will be offered at 6:30 p.m. with the lecture beginning at 7:00 p.m.
